I always have trouble finding a toppic that someone tells me about. I think that the zone should have a board search.

RD, this has been suggested countless times, but I don't think the admins are listening--they've got countless other maintenance chores to keep this site running smoothly.

Actually, I found a way to do it. Since Google has a site search, I've set it up here. Go to site search from the main page. Since you can read the boards without logging in, you can now search them too.

Well, maybe. I'll admit that this is a unique solution, and will probably get the job done, but one must be pretty diligent to do it.

I entered a search for the word search and expected to get hundreds of results. I only got 16, and most of them showed as the phrase in question the following:
"Blind Search: Searching the world of the blind and visually impaired · 31 users logged in Music John Cousin Cap Tyr tarheel1 [N] JH_Radio Raskolnikov ...", or something similar.

However, a search for "search the boards" (surrounded by quotes), got three results in the boards all having to do with searching the boards <duh).

One improvement might be in the initial dialog where you can choose to search either the web or the zone would be to include a third option which allows you only to search the boards, and a fourth option to search user profiles.

These are just my immediate thoughts. I'm sure it will grow on me as time goes by.

Many thanks for the options.

Bob

Bob,
Perhaps already improvements have been made. I had very good results with a word I had desired to search for some time earlier on this day... so now I have tried the word, "search" as you did and this is what I got:

I like this feature and i think it could be very helpfull. But i have got a question.
How often do google update their directory?
The reason i am asking is because i was looking for the word Cyprus. One of the results was my user profile but i think it was an older version of it because the points listed there were less than what i have now.
So i was wondering if we can look for very recent boards or if we have to wait untill they are listed in google.

Update.
I was searching something else and in the results i saw a topick i created only a few days ago so that answered my question i think lol.

Nikos,
Interesting question for I went and tried a search of the word, "Woodzier," a word that I know is in my profile and of three results that showed itself forth, not a one was mentioned in my user profile..

A few comments and notes on this. First, thanks for the feedback. This is very much an experiment. Google tends to update their directory frequently, perhaps a time or two a week. I made a change on user profiles. Before, the words of wisdom and what x has to say did not show unless you logged in.So this meant that they were not indexed by Google. I made this change last night, but it'll probably take Google a bit of time to rescan the profiles and get the new versions in. It's not a perfect solution, but it was much quicker to implement, and better than nothing.

I agree that it's better than nothing, in fact it's pretty good.

Any thoughts of giving us the option to search just the boards?

Anyway, many thanks.

Bob

I used it last night for the first time to search the boards to answer a question for someone. I found what I was looking for a lot faster than if I had gone to that board and scrolled down until finding the topic in question. So it is definitely better than nothing.

Post 12 by nikos (English words from a Greek thinking brain) on Sunday, 04-Mar-2007 11:21:54

I was searching for the word Greek yesterday and a lot of the results i got were just because of the message tag i have under my name for the boards. So the subject didn't have anything to do with anything Greek only because of the tag i had. But in general i found it a very good feature and i discovered interesting topicks from the past.

the problem with the google site search is that it always comes up with something completely different and it can be difficult to find exactly what you want since you aren't only searching the boards, but the whole site.

yeah, i agree with searching the boards. it would be a nice feature to have, it saves searching that google thing, and having to go down to the rite link. what i mean is, opening in a new window is not really a good idea. it should be just part of the zone
